The Gift of Singleness

For most of my life, I have been single. I’ve never been in a place where I despised it, but I have had moments where I would wonder if something was wrong with me because I was still single at my age. I am often questioned about how someone so beautiful who loves the Lord could be alone. A mixture of societal pressure and the voice of people is what worked together to breed insecurity in my singleness.

 

For those reading this who are in the same state I am in, there is nothing wrong with you. This is just where God has you right now and it’s okay. Singleness is a wonderful time to allow the Lord to do a great work in you. During this season, you have the space to seek Him in a greater measure. You have space to learn yourself and love the person God has created you to be.

 

I finally am at a place where I can see singleness as a gift. Most of my life singleness was portrayed as merely a season that you need to “get through”. Marriage was portrayed as the most desirable thing, as the prize – and it is.  However, according to God’s standards, singleness and marriage, are equally amazing gifts. He calls each of us to a ministry of singleness or marriage, and one is not greater than the other.

 

 

Whatever ministry God has called us to, we should learn to cherish it. I’m not sure if singleness is just a season for me or a life ministry. Nonetheless, what I do know is my heavenly Father knows me completely. He knows what’s best for me. God does not call someone to singleness to punish them, but rather He sees what we cannot and knows this would be the best thing for us. God loves us enough to position us in His perfect will and His love will carry us through whatever He calls us to in this life.

 ⁷ Sometimes I wish everyone were single like me—a simpler life in many ways! But celibacy is not for everyone any more than marriage is. God gives the gift of the single life to some, the gift of the married life to others.
